The art portion of Bean Books will now be under the banner of ‘Jones Gallery’ (very exciting).  A little unimaginative, I know, using my name in the title. And shamelessly self-promoting. But still exciting. And the first program I have under the new Jones Gallery banner: art lessons, starting in January 2010 for children and adults. See details below. Jones Gallery Lessons in Art

Typewriter at the BeanA typewriter turned up at the bookstore last week. A typewriter. Enamoured, I said to it: where have you been all my life?

Yes, Bean Books was given the magnificent gift of a 1940s Royal typewriter (thanks Peter), and it has taken up permanent residence on the BlackWatch trunk.

And here’s the thing: people love this typewriter. I had a customer in this week who made a beeline straight for the machine, and plunking down in front of it, said ‘Sorry, I’m not here for books; I’m here for the typewriter.Typewriter cafe

Ok. I can go with that. And so, at the suggestion of one of the Royal’s fans, we have created the Typewriter Cafe. Which consists of: one typewriter and one big stack of white paper.

And here’s the other thing: people have started writing a collaborative story about an olive, unrequited love and the French Foreign Legion. How brilliant is that. We’ll be hitting up publishers soon.

So come on by, grab a coffee, read the Globe (missing one Report on Business), check out the latest in the olive story, and get in touch with some technology from the 1940s.

'Book club for the rest of us'

booksWe have a new book club starting this week, called, inventively, the Thursday Night Book Club. Very exciting. Here’s the deal: there are no scheduled picks for this club, just bring along one book to talk about with the group. There are only two rules: it has to be fiction and it has to be something you’ve read/are reading. Love it, hate it, better than expected? Think every person on the planet should read it? And brilliant dialogue will ensue.

The club starts this Thursday, June 11, 5:30-7 p.m. and will happen every Thursday night from now on. Or until it becomes so popular that we can’t fit everyone in the store or until it fails spectacularly. Everyone is welcome to attend this thrilling venture; no registration required.
